a flower is life
a seed is life
which came first, I cannot say –
yet within the flow and cycle of life
each exists
just as it is


Toward the end of 2022, I was suddenly moved to paint flowers. It didn't matter whether they were real flowers or flowers from my imagination — either would do. I wanted to paint whatever flower called to me, following my heart wherever it led, and render each one in the manner of a specimen. Not as painterly expression, but as if from a field guide.

Once I began, I found myself naturally drawn to the flowers blooming at roadsides, to those peeking out from gaps in walls. Through a loupe, a mysterious microcosm opens up. I was simply astonished by the intricacy of their forms. Nature is transient, and at the same time, resilient. I found myself feeling this anew.

After a while, though I was painting flowers, I began to feel as though I were painting people. Looking at them again, they did indeed resemble portraits. A withering flower held a presence — tinged with loneliness, yet with the quiet gravity of an elder that only that moment could bring forth. At times I found myself nostalgic for my own youth, or a particular person would come to mind unbidden.

Flowers are people. People are flowers.
Perhaps I was borrowing the form of flowers to paint different lives, different ways of being.
　
After a hundred flowers in a hundred variations were complete, I thought next to paint seeds.
That felt inevitable. For seeds are the source of life.

And so the cycle continues.

たねも　いのち
どちらが先かは知らないけれど
巡りのなか　それぞれに
ただ、そのままに
 
 
 
　２０２２年の終わり頃、ふいに花を描こうと思い立った。実在する花でも、イメージの中の花でも、どちらでもよかった。描きたいと思った花を心の赴くままに、標本のような雰囲気で仕上げたいと考えた。絵画的な表現ではなく、あたかも図鑑のごとく。
　描き始めると、道端に咲く花や塀の隙間から顔を覗かせる花にも、自然と目が向くようになっていった。ルーペの中には神秘的なミクロコスモスが広がっている。精巧な造形に、ただ驚かされた。自然は儚くも同時に逞しい。改めてそう感じるのだった。

　しばらくすると花を描いているはずが、まるで人を描いているような気持ちになっていった。眺めれば確かに肖像画のようでもある。枯れゆく花には、どことなく寂しくも、その瞬間にしか醸し出せない老人のような存在感があった。また、自分の青春を懐かしく思い出したり、特定の人を思い浮かべてしまうこともあった。
　花は人。人は花。
さまざまな命の在りようを花の姿を借りて描いていたのかもしれない。

　百種百様の花が仕上がった後、次はたねを描こうと思った。
そう考えたのは必然だろう。たねは命の源なのだから。

　巡りは、まだ終わらない。
